Dr. Robert Baier


Dr. Robert Baier is admitted as a German Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney, European Trademark and Design Attorney, and a representative before the Unified Patent Court (UPC). He has worked in the field of intellectual property since 2013.

His technical background is based on the study of physics at Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, Rutgers University in New Jersey, USA, and the Freie Universität of Berlin. He holds a Master of Science degree in physics from Rutgers University as well as a Ph.D. in physics from Freie Universität of Berlin. He conducted his Ph.D. work at the Helmholtz-Centre Berlin for Materials and Energy (HZB).

His areas of expertise in the field of intellectual property include the drafting and prosecution of patent applications before national and international patent offices (DE, EP, PCT). Another area of focus is representing clients in patent disputes based on technically complex patents, including standard-essential (SEPs) and non-standard-essential (NEPs) patents. In this context, he is regularly involved in opposition and appeal proceedings before the German and European Patent Office, in nullity proceedings before the German Federal Patent Court and the German Federal Court of Justice, in parallel infringement proceedings, as well as in proceedings before the Unified Patent Court.

His technical areas of expertise in the field of intellectual property include information and communication technology, electrical engineering, computer-implemented inventions (software), semiconductor technology, mechanics and medical technology.

Dr. Robert Baier has been recognised as a Rising Star by Managing IP on multiple occasions due to his successful work.
